Persian dance refers to the dance styles indigenous to the area known as Iran. In the Persian language dance is Raghs or Raqs, and is also referred to as Gher Dadan. What it is called and the style is different depending on the area, culture, and language of the local people. For example, the Kord or Kurd call dance Halperke.
The kind of dancing found in most cities and among the diaspora is called ‘raghs’ or ‘gher dadan’ in Persian. It is almost entirely performed to 6\8 time signatures (called “shish o hasht”) and is the only dance that is performed and known by all Iranian peoples regardless of ethnicity. The dance itself is highly individualistic and also heavily relies on solo improvisation performances much like all other Iranian art forms such as music, etc.

Belly Dance is a “Western”-coined name for a traditional “West Asian” dance, especially raqs sharqi. It is sometimes also called Middle Eastern dance or Arabic dance in the West.
The term “Belly Dance” is a translation of the French “danse du ventre” which was applied to the dance in the Victorian era. It is something of a misnomer as every part of the body is involved in the dance; the most featured body part is usually the hips. Belly dance takes many different forms depending on the country and region, both in costume and dance style, and new styles have evolved in the West as its popularity has spread globally. Although contemporary forms of the dance have generally been performed by women, some of the dances, particularly the cane dance, have origins in male forms of performance.
